Bamboo in Your Home

November 10, 2008  /  Lifestyle

An important part of building sustainable homes is using renewable resources. Wood is a beautiful material for everything from furniture to floors in our homes. Yet, once a tree is cut down it will never grow again. Fortunately, there is an alternative. Bamboo is a woody grass that looks like and is just as strong as wood. It grows quickly (some varieties grow as much as 1 meter each day), so it is easily replenished. This makes bamboo a better choice for the environment.

·         Bamboo fences are an attractive alternative to wood privacy and chain link fences. You can easily create an interesting design with bamboo while still retaining privacy you want around your backyard.

·         Bamboo furniture makes an interesting addition to your sustainable home or patio décor. Inside your home, a bamboo bedroom set can create a nice getaway in the comfort of your own home. On the patio, bamboo furniture will stand up to the elements.

·         If you like the look of hardwood floors, consider installing a bamboo floor. Bamboo is an excellent choice for floors and stands up to daily wear and tear just as well as its hardwood counterparts.

Be sure to not overlook the materials used inside your home. Sustainable homes start with renewable products.

The hardness of starnd bamboo is typically around 2800 pounds per square inch (psi). The hardness is in large part due to the density of the compressed flooring combined with the heavy duty binders. The key on starnd is to make sure they are using a very high grade of glue which many claim to, but not all of them are running actual tests.
